FAQ
BRANDYWINE
ORIENTEERING CHALLENGE
1. What's a Rogaine, versus a Classic orienteering event?
In Rogaine, strategy is involved to plan your root choice
to get to as many check points as you can in a given time limit. Participants start at the same time. For the Classic Predetermine course there will be
staggered start of 1 minute intervals. Controls are connected on the map and you must visit them in order. Each category
has different courses. Beginners have easy, Intermediate -somewhat difficult, and Advanced very
Challenging. Fastest time with all controls is the winner in each category.
2. Can you do all these events without running, or is that
missing the point entirely? - my knees are sensitive to too much running, but I love the challenge of
orienteering in the outdoors anyway, just at a slower pace.
Many people do it just for leisure, we call it map hiking.
Set your own pace! Some times walking is better because you do not make mistakes. That is the beauty of
Orienteering. Do it smart, to the best of you ability and enjoy yourself.
3. What instruction events
might be good for me? - what are my options?
If you have taken some introduction to orienteering
workshops, advanced training will be good. Learn Orienteering in the Wilderness workshops will run on June
4th before the O’Challenge.
Let us know your strengths and weaknesses and we will be able to recommend
the best training for you.
4. Is it possible to register a couple of days before the
event?
Yes. However
an Early Bird registration fee will
save you $10.00 before April 30.

6. Do all levels require compass use?
Absolutely! In this area without a compass will be a
difficult task for anyone. Bring a whistle as well.
7. Are the courses all on flat ground, or is there some
elevation gain involved? bushwhacking?
Be prepared for a good work out, bush walk with a very
technical and detailed map. The elevation will depend on your strategy to choose the best route, and even
for the best route there will be a lot of ups and downs. It is a physical, intellectual and mental
challenge.
8. How many water stations are there?
There will be 2 water stations. Water will
also be available at the start and finish areas.
